imprinting
Culture gives us the eyes we see the world with — and for that very reason we don't see those eyes.
Beneath conformism lies something deeper than conformism: an imprint that decides what we are able to see.
Konrad Lorenz called imprinting (Prägung, "coining") the irreversible mark left by a young animal's first experiences: the hatchling that follows, as if it were its mother, the first living being that passes by. Morin carries the image over to humans: there is a cultural imprinting that stamps us from birth with the seal of the family, then the school, then the university or the profession.
It isn't a loose metaphor. Morin anchors it in the brain: imprinting is inscribed in early childhood through the selective stabilization of synapses, and to that mark is added a learning that, along the way, eliminates other possible ways of knowing.
Imprinting is a matrix imprint: not a content one learns, but the mould with which everything else is learned. That's why it feels not like an imposition but like reality. It produces selective inattention (we don't see what contradicts) and eliminative rejection (we discard what comes from a "bad" source).
Normalization guards the imprint. It can be repressive — the stake, the purge — or merely intimidating: the "pressures of thought" that, wherever an uncontested idea reigns, reduce deviants to silence. Whatever contradicts it becomes repugnant, outrageous, ignoble.
And yet ideas change. Where there is cultural heat — exchange, debate, plurality — imprinting loosens, deviations find expression, and each deviation loosens it a bit more. It's a loop. Every innovation, says Morin, is born from deviations that become tendencies.
Free particles receive the seal and fall into rings: imprinting. A few violet ones don't obey — and when they are allowed to live, the seal loosens.
Dónde se ve la huellaWhere the imprint shows
What disgusts you to eat, what feels like a "normal" distance when talking, what sounds out of tune: you chose almost none of it. It arrived before you could choose. You only notice when you travel and someone finds natural what seems unthinkable to you.
Cerebral — los sonidos que se pierdenNeural — the sounds that get lost
A baby distinguishes the sounds of almost any language. Around its first year it loses much of that ability and specializes in those of its mother tongue: a Japanese adult often struggles to hear the difference between r and l. It's the "learning without remission" Morin describes: learning one way of hearing means ceasing to hear others.
The "scientific mentality" was born marginal, deviant, cautious and even cunning before spiritual and temporal powers. In two centuries it became the new orthodoxy of knowledge about the world. But, Morin stresses, an orthodoxy of a new kind: it carries debate and the conflict of ideas within it.
Qué no es el imprintingWhat imprinting is not
-
No es cosa de ignorantesIt isn't for the ignorant
Quite the opposite: imprinting and normalization increase with culture. Morin says it mischievously: there are more personal opinions at a tavern counter than at a literary cocktail party. The higher academic spheres offer "superb examples of conformism".

Imprinting doesn't press from outside: it acts from within, as the very form of perceiving. That's why it's harder to see than propaganda: propaganda is felt; the imprint isn't.

The determinism is enormous but has flaws. Some individuals are more or less marked, crises loosen it, encounters between cultures reveal it. Morin calls breeding grounds the conditions in which new ideas can be born.

A page later comes the harshest consequence: "From then on, imprinting makes one incapable of seeing anything other than what one is supposed to see" (p. 29).
If all knowledge bears an imprint, from where do I criticize mine? Critique too is an inheritance: the tradition born in Athens with the dialogic of ideas. And there's the trap of the intellectual who denounces others' imprinting without seeing their own. No one escapes the seal; the most we can do is make it conscious and set it in dialogue with other seals.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
In education (it's one of the blindnesses of knowledge in Seven Complex Lessons), in the study of algorithmic bubbles — an automated normalization —, in the history of science, in intercultural education and in the critique of each discipline's professional deformation.
