En los años 20, Teilhard de Chardin forja la palabra noosfera: la envoltura de pensamiento que rodea la Tierra, igual que la biosfera envuelve la roca. Por otra vía, Karl Popper habla de un «tercer mundo» — el de los productos del espíritu: lenguajes, teorías, conocimientos. Aunque nacidos del hombre, adquieren una autonomía propia. In the 1920s, Teilhard de Chardin coins the word noosphere: the envelope of thought wrapping the Earth, as the biosphere wraps the rock. By another route, Karl Popper speaks of a "third world" — that of the products of mind: languages, theories, knowledge. Though born of humans, they take on an autonomy of their own.
El físico Pierre Auger va más lejos: no un tercer mundo, sino un tercer reino, en sentido biológico — poblado de organismos, las ideas, que se reproducen en los cerebros humanos. The physicist Pierre Auger goes further: not a third world, but a third kingdom, in the biological sense — peopled by organisms, ideas, that reproduce inside human brains. Monod, and then Dawkins with his "memes", follow this trail. Morin gathers it all to found a noology: a science of the life of the beings of mind.

Una idea pequeña, casi vírica, viviendo su vida en tu espíritu. A song lodges in your head and won't leave. You didn't choose it: it reproduces from brain to brain, humming itself. This is what Dawkins called a meme — a cultural unit that copies and spreads. A small, almost viral idea, living its life inside your mind.

Una vez escrita, una novela se autonomiza: sus personajes «viven sus vidas», capaces de provocarte amor, risa o lágrimas. Flaubert decía «Madame Bovary soy yo», pero Madame Bovary ya no es Flaubert: es un ser de espíritu que se regenera en cada lector. El universo de la obra pasa al ser. Once written, a novel becomes autonomous: its characters "live their lives", able to stir love, laughter or tears in you. Flaubert said "Madame Bovary is me", yet Madame Bovary is no longer Flaubert: she is a being of mind, regenerated in each reader. The universe of the work passes into being.

Morin toma el término «noosfera» de Teilhard y lo arraiga en su paradigma de la auto-eco-organización: las ideas son a la vez producto y productoras de los espíritus que las piensan. La noosfera es médium y pantalla. «Lo que hace que nos comuniquemos es al mismo tiempo lo que lo impide»: las mismas ideas que nos conectan con el mundo pueden interponerse como una bruma y hacernos confundir el mapa con el territorio. Y si las ideas tienen vida propia, surge una pregunta inquietante: ¿las pensamos nosotras, o nos piensan ellas? Hegel llegó a hacer del ser humano el medio con que la Idea se realiza. The noosphere is medium and screen. "What makes us communicate is at the same time what blocks it": the very ideas that connect us with the world can interpose like a fog and make us mistake the map for the territory. And if ideas have a life of their own, a disquieting question arises: do we think them, or do they think us? Hegel went so far as to make the human being the means by which the Idea realizes itself.
